Officers from the Allerdale Neighbourhood Policing team are asking the communities of Workington to take steps to secure their property following an increase in acquisitive crime.

Over the last few weeks officers have been investigating incidents including the thefts of bikes.

Investigations into the incidents have seen officers make three arrests in connection, who have since been released on bail.

Speaking on the increase Sergeant Leesa Edwards said “We are proactively targeting those involved in acquisitive crime and are asking the communities of Workington to take steps to secure their property.

“Additional patrols are in place to disrupt those involved, but we are also asking that people remain vigilant and report suspicious activity to us.”

The Local Community Beat Officer for Workington North, PC Luke McKenna is also holding a free bike marking event to help people protect their property.

There are simple steps that you can take to deter opportunist criminals from taking your property

  • Keep items out of sight
  • Lock and secure your items
  • Mark it
  • Register it
  • Take any removeable items and secure them

Continuing Sergeant Edwards said “Community Beat Officer Luke McKenna will be offering bike markings on Thursday 13 March at 4pm at Workington Leisure Centre.

“The bike markings are a tamper proof sticker which acts as visible deterrent to thieves.

“Your bike will also be registered on the BikeRegister, a national database makes it much more likely that it can be returned to you after a theft.

“We encourage any bike owners to come along to get their bikes marked and registered and talk to us about how they can keep their bikes safe.”

There are also increased patrols in Workington area as part of Operation Enhance.

Operation Enhance is funded after Cumbria’s Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner secured an additional £1m of extra funding from the Government’s Hotspot Response Fund to target anti-social behaviour (ASB) and serious violence in hotspot areas across the county.
