Appeal launched following incident on A595 near Beckermet

Police are appealing for information into an incident on the A595 near Beckermet which resulted in a woman suffering life-threatening injuries.

Police were called at 12am yesterday (Sunday 1 February) following a collision involving a red BMW 118I and a woman who was reportedly lying in the road.

The woman, aged in her 40s, was taken to Royal Preston Hospital for treatment. Her condition is described as critical.

Initial enquiries have identified a potential altercation near to the scene between a man and the woman involved prior to the collision. This led to the man involved leaving the woman and the area.

The investigation is aiming to establish the movements of the woman prior to the collision and how she came to be in the road.

Police have arrested a 45-year-old man, from Egremont, on suspicion of assault causing GBH. He has been interviewed and subsequently bailed pending further enquiries.

Detective Chief Inspector Paddy McDonnell, Cumberland CID, said: “We are appealing for the public’s help to establish the full circumstances of this incident.

“Specifically, we are attempting to understand what occurred prior to the collision where we understand there was a fight between a man and a woman who are both known to each other.

“It is not clear how or why the woman involved was in the road prior to the collision with the BMW or if there had been a separate fail to stop collision prior to the reported incident.

“We would like to hear from anyone who had seen a man and a woman in the area at the time or has any information connected to this incident.”
