Op Colossus - Kendal
On Wednesday morning (20 August) the South Lakes Neighbourhood Policing Team, alongside colleagues from Cumbria’s Operational Support Unit carried out an operation targeting road safety in and around the Kendal area.

Operation Colossus is a 15-week-long operation targeting road safety related issues and anti-social driving in different hotspot areas across the county every week.

Three drivers were arrested during Wednesday’s operation for drug driving offences.

A total of 90 vehicles were stopped during day for a range of offences including speeding, no insurance, illegal number plates and not wearing seatbelts.

Officers carried out four stop searches, issued 24 traffic offence reports and seized two vehicles.

Sergeant Dawn Boyd from the South Lakes Neighbourhood Policing Team said: “Our PACT surveys have highlighted road safety as a top concern for our communities.

“The operation carried out on Wednesday is part of our ongoing efforts to address dangerous and anti-social driving in the area.

“I encourage residents to continue reporting issues to us. Community information is essential for building local intelligence and tackling these problems effectively.”

Cumbria’s Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner, David Allen, said: “The Constabulary and my top priority has always been keeping our residents and visitors safe. This is why targeting dangerous and anti-social drivers is so important.

“Not only is this operation targeting dangerous driving, it also targets illegal e-bikes and e-scooters, which have been raised as a real concern by many members of the public.

“Anti-social and dangerous driving are issues that are regularly raised with me by residents, either at my many public surgeries or by mail. I am pleased to see the Constabulary pro-actively targeting this concern in such an impactful and decisive way. This is policing according to public need, true policing by consent and neighbourhood policing as it should be, locally based and reactive to the need of the public that it serves. This is what I promised when elected, highly visible, highly effective policing, in local areas, tackling local issues of concern.

“I would continue to encourage residents to continue to report this issue to the Police on 101 or 999 in an emergency. If you feel like you still don’t see a difference, please let me know at commissioner@cumbria-pcc.gov.uk or at 01768 217734. I am your voice in Policing so please let me know any of your concerns.”

Operation Colossus was launched after concerns were raised by communities of anti-social driving across Cumbria.

The operation will run over 15-weeks works alongside Operation Enhance – the Constabulary’s long-standing crackdown on anti-social behaviour in hotspot areas (Op Enhance | Cumbria Police) – whilst enhancing road safety around the county to address your concerns.
