A team of detectives, officers and prosecutors have been commended for a first-rate investigation which resulted in two men being convicted of murder and others convicted of offences including assisting an offender.

The investigation was launched following a stabbing at Carlisle's Carlyle Court on 18 September 2021.

The investigation was complicated by the fact the suspects had fled the country in the aftermath of the attack and officers had to overcome a variety of obstacles in tracing the men and then having them extradited back to the UK.

The team which worked on the investigation were commended for their dedication and sacrifice. Those recognised included detectives, constables, family liaison specialists, counsel, and others.

The team were put forward for the commendation by Temporary Chief Superintendent Mick Bird.

He said: "This was a harrowing and upsetting case which impacted the whole city of Carlisle. It was imperative that those responsible for carrying out the murder, or those who assisted them escape, were tracked down and held accountable for their actions.

"Those involved - including but not limited to those commended this week - all played a vital role in ensuring justice was carried out for the family of Mr Kirkpatrick.

"I would like to praise everyone involved for their commitment during this challenging investigation and their thoroughness and professionalism throughout."
