Three officers who worked to save the life of a man undergoing a mental health crisis have been commended by the Chief Constable for their actions.

PC Zach Hudson, PC Jack Massey and PC Lloyd Smith attended an address in Barrow on 1 September 2022 where a man was located hanging from a tree in the garden.

Acting quickly, the officers were initially able to take the man's weight before cutting him down, whereupon PC Hudson immediately began CPR, including chest compressions.

The officers continued working to save the man's life whilst keeping control room colleagues updated on the incident.

The officers kept up their efforts until ambulance colleagues arrived and were able to take over.

The man was taken to hospital and was treated in intensive care for a number of days. However, he was subsequently discharged.

The officers were put forward for the commendation by Inspector Jim Bailey.

Inspector Bailey said: "As police constables, the officers are expected to respond to all manner of difficult circumstances. However, finding yourself in a situation where you need to take swift action to save someone's live is extremely challenging and yet all three officers were able to demonstrate remarkable composure and professionalism throughout the incident.

"Without the swift actions of the officers at the scene, the man may have died or suffered life-altering injuries.

"Their actions are deserving of commendation and recognition."
