A man was yesterday (April 14) jailed for burglary after he targeted homes and vehicles in Carlisle

David Kirkup, 27, of no fixed address was sentenced at Carlisle Crown Court to three years.

He was sentenced for burglary dwelling and theft – no violence, burglary other than dwelling – theft, burglary, theft from a vehicle, possession of a bladed article and assault on an emergency worker.

On 6 January this year police received a report of a suspicious incident on Hasell Street, Carlisle in which a man was seen climbing into a garden which was captured on CCTV. It was later reported by the occupant that a grey bike had been stolen from the shed in the yard.

Following that incident in the early hours of the 7 January, officers were approached by the occupants of another property reporting they had found their rear door insecure and items stolen including a Makita maintenance kit, whisky, wine and a handbag containing cards and cash.

Enquiries by officers at Kirkup’s address located clothing matching the description of the suspicious incident, and located items stolen from the property on Hassell Street.

The court also heard about further incidents on 19 January at an address on Buchanan Road, where the occupant heard their back door slam upon checking found that a wood cutting axe was missing.

Kirkup was arrested that evening following a call from a member of the public of a man with an axe trying door handles in the area of Upperby Road.

Following the arrest police received a report of a theft from a vehicle on Upperby Road in which a toolbox had been taken, but later recovered.

Detective Constable Emma Barker from Cumberland CID said “Being burgled can be incredibly traumatic.

"We are committed to working with communities to bring offenders to justice.”

“We continue to target burglars with Operation Themis.”

Operation Themis is Cumbria Constabulary’s response to and focus on burglaries.
