A policing operation targeting road safety was held in Carlisle yesterday (Tuesday, 16 Sept) and saw arrests made by officers.
Operation Colossus is a force wide operation targeting road related offences and works alongside Operation Enhance targeting anti-social behaviour in hotspot areas.
The Operation was launched after concerns were raised by communities of anti-social driving across Cumbria, with Tuesdays being the third operation held in Carlisle.
A vehicle checkpoint was held on Warwick Road with officers stopping 164 vehicles.
Two drivers were arrested on suspicion of drink driving.
Other action taken included for driving without a license and driving without insurance.
In addition, 10 Traffic Offence Reports (TORs) were issues for offences including driving without a seatbelt, tyre issues, excess speed and driving without due care.
Officers are also working to trace a motorbike seen in the area without a number plate which ignored a red light.
Inspector Andy Leather from the Carlisle Neighbourhood Policing Team said “ We are continuing to join forces with our colleagues in operational support to target anti-social driving and road traffic offences.
“These are issues that have been raised to us by the community as important to them.
“We continue to encourage anyone with concerns about anti-social driving or someone driving dangerously on our roads to report it.”
Cumbria’s Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner, David Allen, said: “I’m pleased to see that Operation Colossus is continuing to produce positive results across the county.
Keeping Cumbria’s roads safe is a key priority for both me and the Constabulary.
“Most of us, thankfully, will never be a victim of a serious crime but we are very likely to witness or be affected by dangerous and anti-social driving.
“I would encourage the public to continue to report dangerous and anti-social driving to the Police – it helps build evidence and intelligence which means we know where to better put our resources to tackle the issue more effectively.
“As Commissioner, I am the residents voice – your voice – in Policing and Fire. If you have any concerns around dangerous driving not being taken seriously in your area, please contact me on 01768 217734 or at commissioner@cumbria-pcc.gov.uk.”
