Two men have today (25 Feb) be jailed at Carlisle Crown Court for aggravated burglary.

Bernard Broughton, 42, of Petteril Terrace, Carlisle and Brian Lamb, 60, of Manor Place, Carlisle, were both sentenced to seven years.

The court heard on 28 May 2024, Broughton and Lamb attended the victims address on Petteril Bank Road, Carlisle.

Broughton called to the victim through the door, when they opened the door Broughton and Lamb pushed their way into the property, pushing the victim to the sofa, where Lamb started punching the victim.  Both pulled out weapons – a screwdriver and a hammer.

Both continued their assault on the victim which had cause them to go in and out of consciousness, they also smashed a table in the process.

Lamb stole a bank card from the property pressuring the victim for the pin during an assault.

Both then left the property, however a neighbour had heard a disturbance and called police, with officers arriving as Lamb was leaving the property.

Broughton was arrested later that day.

Speaking after the case Detective Constable Josh Daniel from Cumberland CID said “Broughton and Lamb subjected the victim to a horrific ordeal, forcing themselves into his home and subjecting him to a prolonged assault.

“Both were also armed with weapons which they used to threaten the victim.

“The police and the courts take such offending extremely seriously, particularly when there is the presence of weapons.

“This is reflected in the sentence handed down today at court.”

The offence is being investigated under Operation Themis – Cumbria Police’s ongoing response to and focus on burglaries.
