Operation Colossus targeting road safety in hotspot areas resulted in four arrests and 35 drivers reported for traffic offences in Carlisle yesterday (April 22).

Officers from the Carlisle Neighbourhood Policing team were supported by officers from the Operational Support and stopped 90 vehicles.

The operation was launched last year after concerns were raised by communities of anti-social driving across Cumbria, with officers carrying out checks on vehicles as well as providing road safety advice to drivers.

The operation resulted in

  • 35 drivers reported for traffic offences, 29 of those for speeding
  • Four arrests for drink or drug driving
  • Five stop searches on persons/vehicles
  • 15 drivers given advice following a safety check on their vehicle

Inspector Alex Johnson from Operational Support said: “The results of yesterday’s operation highlight the need for us to carry out such activity.

“Operation Colossus has allowed us to not just take dangerous drivers off our roads but engage with drivers within our communities.

“I would encourage anyone to report dangerous drivers to us so we can respond and stop them from potentially causing serious injury or killing someone on our roads.”

If you see someone using our roads in a dangerous or anti-social way, please report it to the Police on 101 or 999 in an emergency.

Cumbria’s Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner, David Allen, said: “Anti-social and dangerous driving was one of the biggest issues raised with me by residents, when I consulted ahead of drafting my Police, Fire & Crime Plan. It is, therefore, a priority for Policing in Cumbria.

“I’m pleased to see that the Police continue to tackle dangerous driving as part of Operation Colossus and that they continue taking dangerous drivers off our roads.

“I would encourage the public to continue to report dangerous driving to the Police – it helps to build evidence, allowing the police to know where to put their resources and to get the best results. Please report any such behaviour to 101 or use the Cumbria Constabulary website reporting tool. Don’t use social media and assume that the police have read it or seen it, they probably have not.

“As Commissioner, I am the residents voice – your voice – in Policing and Fire. If you have any concerns around dangerous driving not being taken seriously in your area, please contact me on 01768 217734 or at commissioner@cumbria-pcc.gov.uk.”
