A man was arrested following a multi-agency response in Newton-in-Furness yesterday (26 Aug) which resulted in the EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) being called out.
Cumbria Police were contacted at 11.07am on Tuesday by Ministry of Defence Police (MDP) to a report of suspected ordnances – with the appearance of hand grenades - having been found at an address in Newton-in-Furness.
Police, NWAS and Cumbria Fire and Rescue attended the address.
The EOD were called from Catterick to the scene to assess the device.
Following EOD advice a 100m cordon was put in place, necessitating the evacuation of around 19 nearby properties.
Following examination by EOD specialists, the ordnances were found to be inert.
A 62-year-old man was arrested under Section 51 of the Criminal Law Act 1977 – placing an article with the intention of inducing in another a belief that the said article was likely to explode or ignite and thereby cause personal injury or damage to property.
He has since been released on police bail.
The cordon was lifted at around 5.30pm, with people being allowed back to their homes.
Cumbria Police would like to thank the residents of Newton-in-Furness who were impacted by the evacuation yesterday for their understanding and patience, as well as the other agencies who attended in support of the multi-agency response to the incident.
