A man from Lancashire has been sentenced to 2 years and 8 months in prison after a stop on the motorway found him in possession of 1Kg of cocaine.

Robert Williams, aged 34, of Tonacliffe Road, Rochdale, was jailed on Friday 13 June at Carlisle Crown Court for possession with intent to supply a Class A drug and possession of criminal property.

The court heard how Williams was stopped on the M6 after officers in an unmarked vehicle observed his car swerve onto the hard shoulder.

Williams’ car was stopped and searched, and officers located around £18,000 in cash and a block of drugs, later confirmed as cocaine with a potential street value of around £80,000-£100,000.

A spokesperson from Cumbria Police’s Community and Serious Organised Crime Unit said:  “The initial stop was great work from our Roads Policing Unit who acted on their suspicions to uncover the cash and drugs.

“The subsequent investigation has resulted in not only Williams behind bars, but harmful drugs taken off the streets.

“Our officers work all year round to root out these types of crimes and this is just the latest example of criminals facing prosecution in Cumbria.

“We are committed to disrupt the supply of class A drugs, which cause harm and misery in our communities.”

This work is carried out under the banner of Operation Alliance which is the county’s response to protect the public against serious and organised crime.
