A man from Keswick was yesterday (Jan 6) been jailed for section 18 grievous bodily Harm with intent at Carlisle Crown Court.
Daniel Holden, 56, of Station Road, Keswick was sentenced to four years.
He pleaded guilty to the offence at an earlier hearing in November.
The court heard that on 5 July 2024, North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) contacted Cumbria Police having had a call from Holden reporting he had hit his partner over the head with a pick axe.
In the call to NWAS Holden stated he had ‘attacked his wife’ and that she was ‘badly injured’ and ‘heavily bleeding’.
When officers arrived, Holden confirmed he had assaulted his partner, hitting her three times to the head and that the weapon was in the bedroom.
Officers arrested Holden, where he continued to make comments that he had hit his partner three times and his intent.
The victim was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary with a bleed on the brain.
Detective Inspector Suzanne Redikin was the senior investigating officer.
Speaking following the sentencing DI Redikin said “Holden made significant comments following his arrest on the attack.
“Holden knew the axe would cause potentially fatal damage to the victim when he hit her three times.
“The use of any weapon has the potential to end in tragedy, and the police and courts take such an act extremely seriously.”
