A man from Carlisle was yesterday (Sept 11) jailed at Carlisle Crown Court for a number of offences.
Lewis O’Neil, 24, of Ullswater Road, Carlisle was sentenced to one year and nine months for the following offences
- Assault a person thereby occasioning them actual bodily harm
- Obstructing a constable in execution of duty
- Criminal damage
- Two counts of make off without payment
The court heard that last month on 6 August, O’Neil was in a bar on Botchergate where he approached the victim, an off-duty police officer leaning on him before being shrugged off.
O’Neil then launched several punches at the off-duty officer causing a cut to the face and reddening to the face and ripping his jeans.
O’Neil then left the bar and was detained by officer at the Citadel by the train station where he resisted arrest, locking his hands to his arms preventing officers from handcuffing him.
O’Neil was also identified as a suspect in two offences of making of without payment having been identified on CCTV.
On 5 April 2024, O’Neil and an unknown male consumed nearly £70 worth of food and drink at Siam Thai before leaving the premises without paying.
On 12 May 2024, at Penny Blue O’Neil and an unknown male consumed nearly £200 worth of food and drink and left without making payment.
investigating the case Police Constable Carl Robertson said “O’Neil assaulted the off-duty officer in what he admitted in interview was an unprovoked attack, throwing multiple punches.
“We take violent offences extremely seriously and anyone involved in this type of offending should expect to receive a robust response from us.
“When interviewed about making off without payment O’Neil confirmed to officers it was him in CCTV. This is not a victimless crime and affects local businesses.”
