A man has been jailed for six years and eight months following a stabbing in Carlisle.

Marc Proudfoot, 33, of no fixed abode, was sentenced on Friday 19 June at Carlisle Crown Court for wounding with intent, possession of a bladed article and shoplifting.

At 10:05pm on 4 January 2025, police were called to Botchergate, Carlisle with a report that a man had been stabbed.

When officers arrived at the scene, the victim was located with a stab wound and significant bleeding.

The caller told police they heard Proudfoot asked, “Do you want knifed?”, before attacking the victim.

Enquires revealed Proudfoot and the victim had been involved in a verbal dispute shortly before the attack, and on CCTV Proudfoot can be seen lunging towards the victim, stabbing him in the abdomen.

Proudfoot was arrested shortly after the incident and officers located a knife in his jacket pocket, as well as another knife in his sock.

Both knives had been stolen by Proudfoot earlier in day from a supermarket on London Road, Carlisle.

Detective Constable Kirean Salkeld, Carlisle CID, said: “When Proudfoot went out that night, he was in possession of two stolen kitchen knives – there is absolutely no excuse for this.

“To then go on and use a knife as part of an assault is unjustifiable.

“Any assault with a knife has the potential to end in tragedy and we take offences such as these extremely seriously and will prosecute those who carry knives on our streets.”
