A man has been jailed for four years and six months for a residential burglary in Kendal and a second burglary committed in West Yorkshire while on court bail.
Sean Devaney, 64, of Boroughbridge Road, Knaresborough, was sentenced at Leeds Crown Court on Monday 5 October.
The court heard that Devaney targeted a Kendal home between 23 June and 3 July 2025 while the occupants were away on holiday.
After forcing open a key safe to gain entry, Devaney searched the property and stole jewellery valued at approximately £1,500.
The burglary was discovered when the homeowners returned and reported the incident to police.
A range of forensic enquiries conducted during the investigation established a forensic link between Devaney and the burglary.
Further digital enquiries showed that Devaney had travelled into the Kendal area on two evenings during the timeframe in which the offence was committed.
Devaney was subsequently charged and convicted of the Kendal burglary. The court also considered a second burglary he committed in the West Yorkshire area while on bail.
Detective Constable, Ewan Breeze said: "Burglary can leave victims feeling unsafe in their own home, particularly when offenders target properties while residents are away. Devaney went to considerable lengths to commit this offence, travelling a significant distance to target the property.
“Thanks to forensic evidence and detailed enquiries by officers, we were able to identify him and secure this conviction. I hope this sentence provides the victims with a sense of justice."
The investigation forms part of Operation Themis - Cumbria Constabulary’s response to and focus on burglaries.
