A man from Blackpool has has received an 8 year sentence after an incident in Kendal in January 2024.

Jack Slaven, aged 32, of no fixed abode, was sentenced today (18 March) at Carlisle Crown Court after pleading guilty to:

  • Attempted robbery
  • Two counts of assault against an emergency worker
  • Theft

The court heard how on 26 January 2025 at around 6:15pm had approached his victim, a woman in her late teens, from behind in an unprovoked attack while she had been walking home alone along the river in Kendal.

She was then wrestled to the ground by Slaven where he was then on top of her and restrained her.

This ordeal lasted for a few minutes before, fortunately, a passer-by witnessed what was happening and approached.

Slaven then fled the area.

Following this, he made his way to a local supermarket where he entered the store and stolen several items including meat, tins and sweets.

A police investigation was launched and following enquiries carried out, Slaven was arrested later that night.

While being detained in custody he became violent and aggressive and assaulted two police officers, attempting to headbutt and bite them.

Slaven must serve 5 years in custody with an extension period of three years.

Detective Constable Ewan Breeze said: “This was a completely unprovoked attack which could easily have resulted in injuries had a member of the public not intervened.

“After attempting to steal his victim’s handbag, Slaven then went on to commit further serious offences and I am glad he was quickly identified and arrested following this.

“The sentence Slaven received today is justified and reflects the gravity of his offences.”
