
A Carlisle man has today (April 24) been jailed after driving dangerously and ramming a police vehicle.
Patrick Young, 37, of Firlands, Carlisle was sentenced to three years for driving a motor vehicle dangerously and burglary dwelling and theft – no violence.
He was also disqualified from driving for four years with with an extension period of 18 months in accordance with Section 35A (immediate custodial sentence) of The Road Traffic Offenders Act 1988.
The court heard in the early hours of 10 September police received a report of burglary in the Whitbeck area.
Officers attended and viewed CCTV footage which showed two males in a black Mondeo.
Whilst on patrol in the area an officer sighted a black Mondeo which appeared to be trying to evade him, the officers illuminated his lights and the vehicle made off.
The vehicle had false number plates.
During the pursuit of the vehicle whilst on Croasdale Avenue, Whitehaven the Mondeo reversed into the police vehicle eleven times before making off. The vehicle was stopped by officers and two males decamped from the vehicle. The driver, Young was detained by officers.
Speaking on the case Detective Constable Linzi Wilkinson said “Officers were able to quickly locate the vehicle believed to be involved in the burglary.
“In an attempt to evade justice, Young put people’s lives at risk by driving at speed and dangerously.
“He used his vehicle as a weapon ramming an officer’s vehicle multiple times. Thankfully, the officer involved in the pursuit wasn’t injured.
“With the seriousness of the offending and the immediate risk to the public, tactical contact was made by the roads policing unit to bring the pursuit to a safe conclusion.
“We hope today sentence sends a message to those looking to target our rural communities, we will bring offenders to justice.”
