A man has been charged with possession with intent to supply Class A drugs after police stopped a car on the M6 near Shap yesterday (31 Dec).
Mark McAvoy, 39, of Millarston Avenue, Paisley was driving northbound between junctions 39 and 40 when police stopped his car – a Vauxhall Insignia.
The officer carried out a search a located a cardboard box in the boot.
Upon opening it he found 10 wrapped ‘bricks’ of what preliminary tests indicated to be cocaine.
The bricks were found to be between 1.1 KG and 1.2 KG each. Two further bags of suspected cocaine were also recovered, giving a total of more than 11-and-a-half KG of cocaine.
A brown powder was also recovered, which tests indicated to be 37g of heroin.
McAvoy was arrested and subsequently charged with two counts of possession of Class A drugs – one count for cocaine and the other for heroin.
He appeared before Barrow Magistrates’ Court today (1 January) and was remanded to appear before Carlisle Crown Court on 30 January 2026.
