Over 250 vehicles have been stopped in an operation targeting road safety in Workington on the evening of Saturday 6 September.

Officers from the Allerdale Neighbourhood Policing Team alongside Operational Support set up in Workington to target driving offences.

The activity follows an operation held in Salterbeck on Monday 1 September which led to a drug driving arrest. An operation was also help on 27 August in between Dearham and Dovenby resulted in 22 drivers being dealt with for speeding offences.

On Saturday officers arrested a 41-year-old man from Workington on suspicion of driving a vehicle with a proportion of a specified controlled drug above the specified limit. He has been released under investigation.

Officers also carried out:

  • One vehicle check
  • Four stop searches conducted
  • Eight breath tests conducted
  • Five drug wipes conducted
  • Three driving otherwise in accordance with a licence
  • Two with no insurance offences
  • Two vehicles with bald tyres
  • One driver with no MOT
  • One tax offence

Inspector Steve Waddell from the Allerdale Neighbourhood Policing Team said “The operation is based on concerns raised by the community.

“We have had positive feedback on the operation, which has seen a number of offences identified with one driver arrested for drug driving offences.

“Targeting drink and drug drivers and anti-social driving is not just for officers, but something we can all be active about reporting dangerous drivers putting the lives of road users at risk.

“I would encourage anyone with concerns about anti-social driving or someone driving dangerously on our roads to report it.”
