An extensive multi-agency search of the river Eden in the Carlisle area has been carried out this afternoon following a report of the possible sighting of a person in the river among fast-flowing debris.

Police, Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service, the Coastguard and mountain rescuers have been involved following the report in the Crosby on Eden area at 12.38pm.

A large area from the initial sighting spot has been covered by staff, with tactics including the use of drone technology utilised to search the river, which contains a large number of debris such as branches and logs following yesterday’s heavy rain.

Nobody has reported anyone having gone into the water or having become in difficulty in the water.

At this time no person has been found.

The public may see a larger-than-normal presence of emergency service personnel as a result.
