More than 1600 private CCTV or doorbell cameras have been registered with Connect Cumbria as residents and business owners join forces with officers to tackle criminality.
Connect Cumbria, which launched on Wednesday 11 December, enables officers to access a map detailing pre-registered CCTV or doorbell cameras in a location of a crime.
When a crime takes place, officers can look on the Fusus by Axon portal and see immediately which businesses and residential properties close to the scene have CCTV or doorbell cameras, and therefore may have vital evidence.
During the first week, 1671 private CCTV / Doorbell cameras were registered with Connect Cumbria.
Temporary Superintendent Lee Skelton said: “I would like to thank all those who have registered their CCTV or doorbell cameras with Connect Cumbria.
“The response from the public has been incredible and we are very pleased that residents and business owners in Cumbria are supporting our efforts to tackle criminality.
“The Fusus by Axon platform is an effective tool which quickly and efficiently locates cameras in an area where we may be able to source crucial evidence to aid our investigations.
“The system can only be effective if the public back it. We would like as many cameras registered as possible so we can swiftly identify cameras of interest and make our investigative enquiries.
“Please register today. The process is quick, simple and there is no additional cost.
Cumbria’s Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner, David Allen, said: “This is a really exciting development – I am genuinely thrilled to see so many residents registering their CCTV/Doorbell cameras to help protect Cumbria.
“I am a firm believer that keeping our county safe is a community effort. The police work in partnership with the public and this is a very clear example of this - you – the residents – are helping us achieve this.
“I’d encourage anyone that hasn’t done so yet, to register their camera – the Police will never access them without your permission and will only ask to see footage if a crime has been committed in your area.
“Thank you to everyone that has registered so far for this innovative new scheme – together we are protecting Cumbria from crime.”
In registering a CCTV or doorbell camera, the owner continues to have full ownership of the footage and Cumbria Constabulary does not have access to these cameras. Upon identifying a camera of interest, officers will send a request to the owner for them to review their footage to see if this holds evidence pertinent to the case.
