Two Police and Community Support Officer (PCSO) have joined the Carlisle Neighbourhood Policing Team this month after completing their training at the force’s headquarters.

PCSO Ryley McDowall will join the team covering City West and PCSO Poppy Christie for City Central.

PCSO Christie has already been out in our communities targeting anti-social behaviour at Hammonds Pond, speaking to pupils at Currock and Upperby School about firework safety in the run up to bonfire night and attending a careers fair at Newman School.

PCSO McDowall has been out holding police desks in our communities at Morton Manor along with PCSO Joanna Gerrard and they spoke to member of the community.

PCSOs support the work of the constabulary by providing a visible and reassuring presence on the streets. They work closely with colleagues and partners in the community to provide an approachable uniformed presence with the aim of addressing crime, disorder and anti-social behaviour, thus improving the quality of life in local communities.

Carlisle Neighbourhood Policing Inspector Andy Leather said “PCSOs Christie and McDowall will join the wider Neighbourhood Policing Team to understand and tackle issues in their areas.

“Both have already been out engaging with our communities and working alongside our partners.

“If you see any of our officers out on patrol, please say hi and speak to them about any issues. We also hold meetings within the community which you can find advertised on our social media and website in the ‘Your Area’ section.”

Cumbria’s Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner, David Allen, said: “PCSOs are often the heart of a community – building a trusting relationship between Police and local residents.

“I’m incredibly pleased to see two new PSCOs join the Carlisle Neighbourhood Policing Team. Neighbourhood Policing Teams are vital to our communities and I am eager to see them continue to grow so that every community has visible policing.

“I know PSCOs McDowall and Christie will do a brilliant job and I hope to hear all about their work.”

The work of the Neighbourhood Policing Teams is supported by Operation Enhance.

The operation sees extra police patrols in areas identified as hotspots, such as Workington Town Centre for anti-social behaviour and/or serious violence across the count after the Cumbria’s Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner secured an additional £1m of extra funding from the Government’s Hotspot Response Fund.

We are keen to hear the thoughts of people who live and work in these hotspot areas – please take five minutes to complete this survey: https://forms.office.com/e/srjy010hfq
