A man from Workington has been jailed for one count of coercive and controlling behaviour, three counts of ABH (Actual Bodily Harm) and one count of intentional suffocation.
Sam Thomas, 44, of Winifred Street, Workington was sentenced to five years and six months.
He was found guilty of the offences at Carlisle Crown Court on the 14 May 2026 following a long trial.
Between Tuesday 1 April 2025 and Friday 24 October 2025, a woman endured a prolonged period of horrific physical, psychological, and verbal abuse.
Temporary Detective Constable Jodie Proctor said:
“This was a sustained period of coercive control and physical abuse that had a significant impact on the victim.
"It can be incredibly difficult for victims of abuse to speak about what has happened to them.
"Any reports we receive will always be taken seriously and handled with care, professionalism, and sensitivity.
"Cumbria Constabulary works closely with trusted partner agencies to ensure people receive the right support, tailored to their individual circumstances.
"We will not tolerate offences of this nature, and we are committed to doing everything within our power to hold those responsible to account and bring them to justice.
"I would encourage anyone who has experienced these offences to come forward so our officers can investigate. You will be supported throughout the process.”
